What is erectile dysfunction?
Erectile dysfunction (ED) is difficulty getting or keeping an erection firm enough for satisfactory sexual activity. Trouble once in a while — after a stressful day, an illness or too much alcohol — is normal. It becomes a concern when it happens repeatedly or continues for weeks or months.
Common causes
ED usually has a mix of physical and psychological causes:
- Physical: diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, heart disease, obesity, low testosterone, nerve problems, some medicines, smoking and alcohol
- Psychological: stress, anxiety, depression, relationship problems and worry about performance
- Lifestyle: lack of exercise, poor sleep and long-term tiredness
Why ED deserves a proper check
The blood vessels that supply the penis are very small, so they are often affected early by diabetes, high blood pressure or heart disease. ED can therefore be one of the first signs of one of these conditions. A consultation is not only about sexual performance — it is also a chance to look at your overall health.
How homeopathy approaches ED
Your doctor takes a detailed case history — your symptoms, stress levels, sleep, lifestyle, other health conditions and medicines — and selects a remedy for you as an individual. Homeopathic treatment is free from the side effects (such as headache or flushing) associated with conventional ED medication. It is not a replacement for treating diabetes or blood pressure: please continue any medicines you have been prescribed.
What to bring to your consultation
- Recent blood sugar and blood pressure readings, if you have them
- Any recent test reports and a list of your current medicines
- A note of when the problem started and whether it happens every time
Every consultation is confidential, and if you prefer privacy you can consult online, with medicines couriered to your home.
When to seek urgent care
Go to a hospital immediately if erection problems come with chest pain or breathlessness, follow an injury or surgery, or if an erection is painful and lasts more than four hours — that needs emergency treatment.
