What is prostate enlargement?

The prostate is a small gland below the bladder that surrounds the urine passage. With age it often grows, a common and non-cancerous condition called benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). As it enlarges it can squeeze the urine passage and irritate the bladder.

Common symptoms

• Needing to pass urine often, especially at night
• A weak or slow stream, or stopping and starting
• Difficulty starting, or straining to pass urine
• Dribbling at the end, or a feeling the bladder is not empty
• A sudden, strong urge to go, sometimes with leakage

What is a normal prostate size?

In adult men the prostate is roughly walnut-sized, about 20–25 mL on ultrasound, and a volume above about 30 mL is generally called enlarged. But size alone does not decide treatment — your symptoms and test results matter most. Please bring your scan report to your consultation.

Simple things that can help

• Reduce fluids, tea, coffee and alcohol in the evening
• Do not hold urine for long, and try to empty the bladder fully
• Stay active and keep a healthy weight
• Ask your doctor before taking cold or allergy tablets that can worsen urine flow

When to see a doctor promptly

Go to a hospital urgently if you cannot pass urine at all, have blood in the urine, or have fever with urinary symptoms or severe pain. Men over 50 (or over 45 with a family history) should also discuss prostate checks with their doctor, since other conditions can cause similar symptoms.
