Taking Homeopathic Medicines: Coffee, Allopathic Medicines and Common Questions

Can I take homeopathic medicine along with allopathic medicines?

In most cases, yes. What matters is that your homeopathic doctor knows everything you take, including vitamins and herbal products. Never stop a prescribed medicine — for blood pressure, diabetes, thyroid, heart disease, asthma or epilepsy, for example — on your own. If your condition improves, any reduction is planned gradually with the doctor who prescribed it.

Can I drink coffee or tea?

Practice differs between doctors and between medicines. Some homeopaths ask patients to keep a gap between the medicine and strong-flavoured foods and drinks such as coffee, mint or strong smells. Others are less strict. Please follow the specific instructions your doctor gives you for your treatment rather than a general rule.

How should I take and store the medicines?

• Take them exactly as your doctor instructs — the timing and method can differ for each patient
• Keep them in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and very strong smells
• Keep all medicines out of reach of children
• Do not share your medicines with someone else, even for the same complaint

What about children, pregnancy and breastfeeding?

Homeopathic medicines are generally well tolerated by children. Always tell the doctor if the patient is pregnant, planning pregnancy or breastfeeding, and tell us about any other medicines a child takes.

When should I contact my doctor?

• If your symptoms get worse, or new symptoms appear
• If you are unsure how to take a medicine
• Before starting any new medicine, or stopping an existing one
• Immediately, or go to a hospital, for severe symptoms such as breathing difficulty, chest pain or high fever
