What does the thyroid do?
The thyroid is a small gland in the neck that controls the body's metabolism — how fast it uses energy. An underactive thyroid (hypothyroidism) is much more common, especially in women. An overactive thyroid (hyperthyroidism) is less common.
Symptoms of an underactive thyroid
- Tiredness, sluggishness and weight gain
- Feeling cold, dry skin, hair fall
- Constipation and low mood
- Irregular or heavy periods, or difficulty conceiving
- Swelling in the front of the neck (goitre) in some people
Symptoms of an overactive thyroid
- Weight loss despite a good appetite
- Palpitations, sweating and heat intolerance
- Anxiety, restlessness and tremor
- Loose stools and difficulty sleeping
The tests
A blood test (TSH, often with T3 and T4) is the only reliable way to know. Once diagnosed, thyroid levels need to be rechecked regularly — usually every few months at first, then as your doctor advises.
Where homeopathic care fits in
Homeopathic treatment is chosen for you as an individual after a detailed history and is offered as supportive care for the whole person, alongside your tests. It does not replace thyroid tablets. Please never stop or change a thyroid tablet on your own; that decision belongs to the doctor treating your thyroid, guided by blood tests. See thyroid homeopathy treatment.
When to seek urgent care
Go to a hospital for a racing heart with extreme weakness, confusion, a rapidly growing neck swelling, or trouble breathing or swallowing.
